LPD seizes drugs and guns during drug seizure in residential area

LAUREL, Mississippi (WDAM) – A man was arrested and a large number of drugs and guns were seized during a drug seizure on Tuesday morning.

According to LPD, the bust occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday in a residential area. Officials said this was an unusually large volume of drugs found in a residential area.

“We don’t usually come across this type of operation in our wealthier or residential neighborhoods,” said LPD Captain Michael Reaves. “I think the residential area, maybe they thought they were safe for prying eyes, things like that. But I mean, it just shows these guys work everyday, you know. Every lead, insignificant as anybody thinks it is, that lead can lead to something, you know, something like this or this tip instead.

LPD said Jason Wilson, 38, of Bay Springs, was arrested at the scene.

Officials say Wilson will be charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell with improvements for possession of a firearm and while being within 1,500 feet of a church.

Approximately 1,400.9 grams of methamphetamine were seized from the chest. Ecstacy, oxycodone, marijuana and MDMA were also seized.

“This is the most important of the past few months,” Reaves said. “I mean, we’ve had interstate busts where we’ve had much larger amounts of drugs. We’ve had, you know, unfortunately we’ve had drug seizures where we’ve seized that amount before. But it’s not something you learn about every day. And there you have it, this volume is unusual especially in a residential area.

Authorities also seized around 18 firearms, including hunting rifles and handguns.

The incident is still under investigation by the LPD. Further arrests could be made during the investigation.
